Favourite Films of 2010

by on 2010/12/30

Here is my list of personal favourite films, all released and reviewed in 2010, arranged in descending order.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World

“I’d like to take this opportunity to use the word “dazzling” without irony.  With an incredible cast, a great soundtrack, and psychedelic effects, it’s a great distillation of geek culture, everything Infinite Playlist could have been, and more. Much more.”

Inception

“In many ways Inception is an experience I’ve waited for all my life, a fractal chase.  While I wish it offered the substance of an eXistenZ, on its own terms it’s a master of forms:  setups and payoffs for the caper-enthused, Fleming Sweep action for those who love Bond, and mental gymnastics for time travel fans.  If “hypnotist hit men in an Escher sketch” sounds like a dream come true, then you may want to give it a spin.”

The Book of Eli

“In the early goings of the film, I found it absolutely impossible to stop myself from saying, “My god, that’s exactly like Fallout!”

“Fiercely entertaining and involving, The Book of Eli takes the post-apocalyptic road movie to a whole new level, and you will want to watch this film again and again.

“Particularly if you are a Fallout fan.”

Daybreakers

“Daybreakers is a beautiful and terrible portrait of a tortured and unwilling predator. This visually stunning film is set in a post-apocalyptic future where a vampiric plague has wiped out all but a few humans and turned mainstream population into blood-sucking fiends.

“Brothers Spierig please keep making movies whatever you do. I’ll be there.”

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

“I appreciate how different this entry feels compared to the earlier ones.  The cast is more focused, the objective is clear, and the playing field is different. It is a testament to the strength of the adventure that the heavy-handed proselytizing fails to overwhelm it.”
